How To Find the Best Dog Training Program for Leash Pulling in the Fort Collins Area

Fort Collins offers the ideal backdrop for recreation for pet parents and their pups; plenty of hiking and other activities. An excellent dog training program can make all the difference in teaching a puppy skills, including walking obediently on a leash without pulling.

Whether new to pet parenting or seasoned with years of experience, an expert, reputable, and trusted dog trainer like Adam Volz can help you troubleshoot distinct issues like leash training and strengthen the relationship you share with your fur baby.

What To Look for in the Ideal Dog Training Program

When consulting with a professional dog trainer in your local Fort Collins area for the first time, prioritize asking about their philosophy and methods for training and make sure this approach aligns with your needs and preferences.

A training expert will ideally use positive reinforcement with rewards, including treats and praises for appropriate behavior, and guide the pup toward alternative behavior when inappropriate ones are used. Dogs develop a love of learning when approaching training in this way, and it strengthens their bond with their pet parents.

The professional trainer will also question your puppy’s specific needs, for instance, leash training, if you struggle with him pulling when taking walks.

Not all trainers will provide the same services, so it’s important to find out whether private training is available to address any issues you currently have. Go here for loose leash training guidelines.

    Types Of Dog Training

A new pup or even an adult dog with behavioral issues needs proper training for his well-being and to establish a healthy relationship with you as his pet parent. Many puppies have difficulty adjusting to the leash and tend to pull when they walk.

This is a behavior that needs to be corrected and can be when appropriately trained, along with various other behavior and obedience programs. Here are sessions commonly provided in professional dog training programs.

    Leash/collar

Some canines are challenged to walk on a leash, but this program guides the dog to walk alongside his pet partner without tugging. When the puppy begins to pull on the leash, you want to stop moving.

When he releases his control, praise him and move forward. The method involves positive reinforcement, treats or praise, and much patience and sufficient time when taking a stroll with your pup.

    Obedience

When learning obedience, the canine is taught a series of basic commands, including sit, come, stay, and heel. This is meant to develop structure for the puppy and ensure positive behavior in the home. It further strengthens your relationship.

When the dog responds appropriately to a command, he should be immediately praised for his proper behavior. You don’t want to delay your response to confuse him.

    Behavior modification

When a dog is displaying behavior issues, including separation anxiety, fear, anxiety, or aggression, it’s essential to reach out to a trainer to help with behavior modification exercises. The professional will work with the pup to identify the underlying issue so it can be resolved or “modified.”

Often, modifying behavior is used cohesively with other forms of training. As the pet parent, trainers will also work to help you learn to recognize and understand your canine’s body language.

The pup can’t tell you how he’s feeling, but when you learn to communicate in other ways, you can read his emotions better and help him cope with them.

    Agility

Trainers will work with dogs to maneuver through a series of obstacles, including tunnels, over jumps, and weaving around poles when working on agility. It’s a fun and engaging way to mentally and physically stimulate the pup, plus improve their overall fitness.

The exercises improve his focus as he becomes more determined to overcome the obstacles. As a puppy develops his skills and accomplishes the tasks, he gains a greater sense of confidence.

    Socialization

The recommendation is to enroll your pup in a dog training program in his earliest years to socialize him. The dog can become reactive around other pets, children, and strangers without adequate social skills. This can lead to difficulty in attempting to walk your pup or when having guests in your home.

A trainer will expose the pup to varied social settings where he will meet other dogs and new people. This prevents the possibility of fear or aggression developing when the puppy is put in social situations without having appropriate training.

    Positive reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a pretty straightforward concept in that appropriate behavior is rewarded with praise, play, treats, or toys. Inappropriate behavior is not rewarded; however, it is also not scolded or punished. An important thing to remember is to switch up the rewards and base them on the type of training.

For instance, in a dog training program, the professional will likely use a special treat, something the pup would only have when working on reactive behavior because it’s a challenge for the puppy and difficult to modify for a pet parent.

You want to avoid using the same reward all the time, or the canine will grow accustomed to it, which may affect their progression with training. Instead of offering a treat each time they respond, play, offer a toy, or give praise and affection.

    Final Thought

Whether a puppy is a first adoption or one of many that have come before him, a dog training program in the early years is essential for socialization, obedience, and leash training, among other programs listed here.

Working with a professional trainer builds a dog’s confidence, develops his physical and mental well-being, strengthens the bond between pet parent and canine, and improves his quality of life.

The best dog training program in your local Fort Collins area will enlist positive reinforcement as their technique. The objective is for dogs to have a good time learning and look forward to the next session.
