    Lung Cancer Awareness: Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Early Detection

    Cancer in the lung starts when there is uncontrolled cell division in the lungs. The cells in our body divide and make copies of it as it is a part of a normal function in our body. Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer that has affected millions of people all over the globe. Research has shown that lung cancer is more common in men than in women, but even so, this gap is known to be closing as smoking patterns have been increasing in both sexes. 

    Symptoms of Lung Cancer

    Many times lung cancer symptoms can look similar to other illnesses. It is seen that in some patients symptoms don’t show as compared to other patient that has lung cancer. However, it is better to have insight into the symptoms of lung cancer. Here is a list of symptoms a person can experience if they have lung cancer: 

    • Loss of appetite.
    • Weight loss.
    • Fatigue.
    • Coughing can get worse over time.
    • Shortness of breath and trouble breathing. 
    • Discomfort in the chest area.
    • Coughing out blood.
    • Swelling in the neck, face, arms, and upper chest area.

    First Sign of Lung Cancer

    An early sign of lung cancer can start from an uncontrolled cough that keeps on coming back even after treatment. It is important to consult with your respected doctor for further information regarding the uncontrolled cough. Other symptoms of lung cancer include shortness of breath and chest pain. 

    Sometimes these symptoms can happen early and also it doesn’t happen until the cancer has progressed to the later stages, this is mainly due to the location of the cancer it starts from. It is important to get screened early if you feel any abnormalities in your daily life as it can save you from developing lung cancer. 

    Diagnosis and Treatment For Lung Cancer

    Early detection and early diagnosis of lung cancer are very important as if a patient is diagnosed at an early stage cancer can be easy to deal with without any trouble. Following are the types of diagnosis done to diagnose lung cancer: 

    • A thorough physical exam
    • Blood Test
    • Imaging tests such as X-rays, and CT scans.
    • Biopsy 
    • Molecular Test.

    Lung cancer treatments are designed to get rid of cancer in your body or to slow the growth of cancer cells that are spread throughout your body. Lung cancer treatments are of many types where some can remove the cancer cells in the body, slow the growth of cancer cells, or teach your immune system to fight cancer. Some therapies can help in reducing and relieving the pain. Treatment for lung cancer mainly depends on the type of lung cancer you have, how far it has spread through your body, its location, and other factors.

    Surgery: Surgery is mainly done to remove the cancer and some healthy tissue around the affected area. Lung cancer surgery procedures include wedge resection, segmental resection, lobectomy, and pneumonectomy.

    Radiation therapy: Using of poerful energy beams to treat cancer. This energy comes from X-rays, protons or some other source. Radiation therapy may be used before surgery or after surgery. 

    Targeted therapy: Therapy that is used to treat cancer using medecines that target specific chemica;ls in the cancer cells.

    Immunotherapy: Traetment that helps the body immune system to kill cancer cells. Immunotherapy is mainly done after surgery to kill any cancer cells that remains in the body.

    Ensure that you have a thorough information regarding the types of lung cancer you may have or the the type of lung cancer treatment you will have before starting the treatment. Also, its is important to consult with your doctor for further information.  

    Risk Factors 

    There are numerous factors that can increase the risk of lung cancer. There are some risk factors that is easy to control, but there are some factors that can’t be controlled.

    • Risk factors for lung cancer:
    • Smoking
    • Exposure to secondhand smoke
    • Exposure to radon gas
    • Precious radiation therapy
    • Exposure to cancer-causing substance
    • Family history of lung cancer

    Lung cancer is one of the deadly forms of cancer that has affected both men and women over the years. It is important to be aware and understand the early signs and symptoms, and their potential dangers. Early detection is very important as with the help of certain diagnostic procedures one is able to diagnose the stage of lung cancer. The earlier the diagnosis the better.
